THE 2020 DREAMS PROJECT
Hello. Our names are Kelly Bulkeley and Maja Gutman and we are co-directors of the 2020 Dreams Project, an original work of digital scholarship sponsored by Stanford University Press.
This project will explore the historical significance of 2020 as seen through the prism of collective dreaming. We invite you to participate in this project by sharing a dream you experienced during 2020, or in the first few weeks of 2021, relating to the historical events of that time period, such as the pandemic, racial justice protests, natural disasters, and the US Presidential election. If you are willing to share a dream of 2020, please read and complete the consent form below.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY?
The purpose of this study is to understand how dreams reflect aspects of collective experience during the year 2020. You must be 18 or older to participate.
WHAT DOES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS STUDY INVOLVE?
Your participation in this study involves one or both of the following:
1) telling us a dream and answering questions about yourself;
2) sharing a commentary about dreams and the events of 2020.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF PARTICIPATING IN THIS STUDY?
The risks are minimal and no greater than having a conversation about your dreams or your views about current events with a friend.
Although the project will be available to anyone on the internet, your personal identity will remain hidden, and your dream will appear anonymously.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN THIS STUDY?
There are no direct benefits, but many people enjoy talking about their dream life and/or sharing their opinions and other aspects about their life. Also, many people feel that they gain personal insight by thinking about their dreams. The dream reports gathered for this project will become part of a unique archival collection, a kind of dreamer's time capsule, in which future generations will be able to explore the content of our dreams from the epochal year of 2020. Many participants enjoy the knowledge that they are making their own contribution to this historic collection of dreams.
WILL YOU RECEIVE ANY COMPENSATION FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS STUDY?
No compensation is provided.
CAN YOU WITHDRAW FROM THIS STUDY?
If you agree to participate in this study but then change your mind, you may stop participating, and your data will be returned to you. Once the project is published, and after one year has passed, any data collected as part of your agreed participation will remain part of the archived study records.
WILL CONFIDENTIALITY OF YOUR RECORDS BE PROTECTED?
We will maintain the confidentiality of all data and records associated with your participation in this research. The data will be preserved in private, password protected computers. We will report our results using both aggregated data and individual responses. Real names will never be used with dream reports.
WHAT RIGHTS ARE BEING REQUESTED?
Stanford University Press is requesting non-exclusive world rights, in all languages, for this and any subsequent editions of the project. “Non-exclusive” means that you still retain your rights to publish your dreams and/or commentaries elsewhere.
If you wish to participate, please click the consent button below. Thank you!
